Here you will find bookmarks for inspiration on how to make a bookmark. Check out the Boston Braid Bookmark for the basic instructions for making a bookmark. The only thing that will change in most bookmarks are the type of "Block" you use. In the Boston Braid Bookmark you use a Boston Block. In these bookmarks some are made with the Combination Blocks and some are made with the Half Square Block. Click on the Blocks link above to see the block instructions. Once you have learned to make a "Block" you will be able to see the blocks in the patterns below. Refer to the Boston Braid for written instructions for assembling a Bookmark. Just substitute your chosen block for the Boston Block and lay them out according to the bookmark you chose to make.
Some bookmarks have 6 blocks to a row and some use 8 blocks to a row. A 1 1/2" template was used for the 6 blocks and a 1 1/4" template was used for the 8 blocks. You can make any bookmark with the 1 1/2" template but your finished bookmark will be a bit bigger than what I have here. Borders are optional. I use them on the 8 block bookmarks and usually don't use them on the 6 blocks just because as I sell what I make I like them to be reasonably the same size tho they do vary some in size. I also use a scant 1/4
seam allowance. If you use a larger seam allowance your bookmark will be a little bigger than mine. I aim for a 7 1/2" x 2 1/2"-3" unfinished bookmark.
Remember --After you have made your bookmark it is best to spray your bookmark really well on both sides with spray sizing(you will find it in the laundry section and it is only a dollar or so) . After spraying each side- iron it really flat. I like to let it set over night and it should be really stiff. They will bend some but they should be pretty stiff. You can try spraying it with starch but I thought the sizing worked better.
I don't add batting because I like the flat look. You certainly can add a layer if you would like-if you do -make sure you baste down the side you are going to leave your opening on before you sew the layers together to make it easier to turn the bookmark right side out.
Don't let the tiny pieces intimidate you. If you learn to make a "block" the tiny pieces just happen as you join "blocks" together!!
You get dramatic looks with easy piecing with the cut down method!!
If you can sew straight lines and cut out squares and sew squares together you can make these!!
